A Bastard Child

Since he was a child Knutte Wester has listened to the stories of her grandmother Hervor, an advocate for women’s rights. But Hervor’s stories are not about princes or princesses: they are about Hervor herself. They are stories about Hervor’s rough childhood at different foster families and orphanages.

Hervor Wester was born as an unwanted child in 1909 in Stockholm, Sweden. Her mother was unmarried, a great shame in the Swedish society of the time. Her parents banished their pregnant daughter, and society labelled her a whore. The mother and daughter were outcasts.

The story of Hervor Wester and her childhood is illustrated with Knutte Wester’s beautiful hand-painted animation. The events happened in the Sweden of the early 20th century. It is in the past, but not ancient history. “Look around you. It is still happening. People still drive each other away. Children are still being torn from their roots.”
